Dear Colleagues,
My name is Jordan Canzonetta, and I’m a doctoral candidate in the Composition and Cultural Rhetoric program at Syracuse University. Over the past few years, I’ve developed a focus on educational technology as it relates to writing revision applications, plagiarism detection, and assessment software. I’ve honed my research interests to more acutely analyze how humans and machines collaborate on teaching labor, especially as the labor crisis in higher education worsens and strains contingent faculty members.
My dissertation design is shaping up as case studies of technologies with very different pedagogical orientations to composition practices. As such, I’m hoping to conduct a survey and interviews with teachers who have used either Turnitin, WriteLab, or Eli Review for at least one assignment in a college writing course (past or present). Both the Qualtrics survey and interviews are designed to learn how teaching labor changes when using these programs. Participants will remain completely anonymous for the survey, which consists of multiple choice questions and a few fill-in options; the survey will be open for two weeks starting today. Depending on how many different technologies you have used, the survey will take approximately 5-20 minutes. If you’ve only used one of the technologies mentioned above, it shouldn’t take more than 5-10 minutes.
If survey participants would like to volunteer to interview , they may choose to leave their email in a fill-in-the-blank box in the first survey prompt (or you may email me directly at [email protected]). Interview participants will receive a $20.00 Amazon Gift Card for their time and labor, which should take 30-60 minutes. The interviews will be recorded through Evernote and conducted via Skype (with your preference of audio or video). I will contact you to schedule an interview via my Syracuse University email address. In my analysis of this data, no identifiable information will be reproduced. If you provide an email for the interviews, after twelve months (to allow time for follow up questions), I will delete your email address permanently. If at any point you wish to abandon the study, you are completely free to do so.
